17 vs 20 inch wheels
Still kinda pondering about a new truck, vs keeping/fixing mine. Gonna put the 20s back on within the next month so we'll see if I notice a difference going back. I just removed some milled out Hummer 17x8.5 H2 wheels and Cooper 37x12.50R17s on my truck, "As I lay rubber down the street, I pray for traction I can keep... but if I spin and begin to slide, please dear God protect my ride." 20 in wheels usually result in getting a tire with less sidewall and therefore less lateral sway/bounce, this is readily evident in a 20x9 wheel. Really, the biggest difference between the three wheel sizes is subjective—you’ll notice different ride and handling characteristics if you swap sizes, even if the ultimate performance test data doesn't show a major difference. I wish I had 17's instead of 20's. but i have the forged trd 17 inch wheels and they are only 24 or 26 lbs each. Im looking at new and used Dodge 1500 SLT models and just about every one I see at a dealer that has the 5.7 Hemi engine, ALSO has 20 inch alloy wheels. The bigger sidewall on the 17's also helps absorb the bumps and pot holes. I don't know how a 20" AT tire will compare to a 17" AT tire. Smaller wheels also allow thicker sidewalls. My old Silverado had 20" wheels and averaged 17.6 over 165,000 miles. In terms of noise, surprisingly, the 18-inch wheels were the quietest, but perceived loudness has as much to do with pitch as it does decibel count. The smallest wheels offered the best ride quality, too, though with a slight reduction in perceived stability. I have 20's on my truck and after installing them I think the mileage went down but it was not by much. Thicker sidewalls = better ride comfort and better protection from hitting potholes/debris. Tires are going to be cheaper for the 17… The folks at Tyre Review take a Volkswagen Golf GTI to Goodyear's test track in the south of France and compare how it drives on the 17-, 18-, and 19-inch wheels it's available with from the factory. Given the unsprung weight of thw wheel/tire comlared to that of the truck, any mileage effect will so minor you wont see it.
